The research was completed in 2004 by Professor Richard Brown.
His interest in this subject began when he was an undergraduate. He was given a topic by his tutor for a special project, and he found the work so fascinating that when he started his PhD, he decided to use the same material and to investigate it further.
Most of the research was conducted in the laboratory, although there was also some field work, which was done on location in Norway last year.
When all the data had been collected, Professor Brown and his team began to write up the results. The finished paper was sent to the relevant journal last December, and was published soon after. Many other researchers were / are interested in what they had / have discovered and this ground-breaking work has already led to a number of other projects being started.
